Nirivian National News Service June 15 2000 As the beleaguered world outside of Nirivia trudges on with the unenlightened focused and fascinated by the fortunes of little Elian Gonzales in the US and Canadian journalist write about the political battles of Stockherder Day, Preston Womanning, and Tom Shortlong of the Alliance party, here is some real news!
Weather in Nirivia Open waters on Superior came very early this year after a mild winter so that some intrepid seafarers were about the islands early in April.
Lake Superior water levels were well below normal but this has been rectified by significant rainfalls in late May and through June. Present readings are .06 metres above chart levels.
Fishing in Nirivia Excellent trout fishing prevails. One party of six from Michigan and Ontario caught well over a hundred trout in a six-day period but as conservators only a dozen were taken home for barbecues.
Birds This spring the annual battle between Gulls and Bald Eagles has been renewed for another year. In aerial combat the seagulls continue to harass the slower moving eagles with some marvelous maneuvering. Usually the eagles are completely outgunned but occasionally they sneak in from the heights and grab a gull's chick and for this they can never been forgiven. Osprey, mergansers, grebes, scads of warblers, golden eye, scaups whimbrels, have all been sighted.
Kayakers Few kayakers have made their way through the waters of icy Superior this spring en route to Rossport or Thunder Bay. One group from Minnesota stayed over at the domes in early June. They were calling their trip, 'Hypothermia 2000'. Mist and rain and below average temperatures will hopefully lift in July and August.
Bears and Big Guys One bear was sighted fishing at Todesco Creek in May and Moose have been sighted in the deep woods. Bugs So far a rage of little black bombers and mosquitoes have not materialized but bring the deet if you are coming to Nirivia or northwestern Ontario.
Water Its everywhere in Nirivia and the waterfalls are in great display. Traveling difficulties have been nil on our trips back and forth to Red Rock but occasionally the Raptor has had to run using GPS because of mists and fog.
Invasion of Airspace The ongoing problem of jet liners crossing Nirivian airspace prevails. Mostly we just see their effluent in the sky. One Nirivian has been working on his slingshot to discourage these aliens above but it is difficult to launch popcorn over ten feet in the air. That's all for now from Nirivia.
Cheers folks and citizens.
